To find the score you need on your final, solve Final = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Example: an 85% current grade, a 30% final, and a 90% target needs (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 91.67% on the final. If the answer is over 100%, the target isn't reachable with that weight.
Your course grade is a weighted average of work already done and the final exam. Once you know your current average and how much the final counts, the score you need is just algebra. Enter the three numbers below and the calculator solves it live — and tells you when a target is impossible or already locked in.
Enter your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and the course grade you want. We solve the standard weighted-average formula for the score you need on the final.
Uses the weighted average Target = Current × (1 − weight) + Final × weight. If your final carries 0% weight, the exam cannot change your grade.
Let C be your current grade, w the final's weight as a decimal (so 30% = 0.30), and T your target course grade. The course grade is:
The term C × (1 − w) is what your current work already contributes; the rest of the target must come from the final. This is the same weighted-average math every syllabus uses — no school-specific policy is assumed.
Use the weighted-average formula: Target = Current × (1 − w) + Final × w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. Solve for Final: Final = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. Example: an 85% current grade, a 30% final, and a 90% target needs (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 91.67% on the final.
If the grade needed exceeds 100%, the target is mathematically impossible with the weight you entered — you’d need more than a perfect final. Lower your target or increase the final’s weight (or add extra credit) to make it reachable.
If you need 0% or less, you have already locked in your target before the final — even a zero keeps you at or above your goal. You can relax a little, though a strong final still helps your overall average.
Not for this single calculation. The formula only uses the final’s weight; your current grade is treated as the average of everything already completed, weighted 1 − w. If your syllabus weights don’t sum to 100%, use the Class Grade Calculator instead, which divides by whatever total weight you enter.
